History
In 1985, the North Carolina Surplus Lines licensees decided to establish a new office to help promote a stable excess and surplus lines market for policyholders in North Carolina. Therefore, on June 11, 1985 the North Carolina Surplus Lines Association (NCSLA) was formed and incorporated. The association would be governed by a board of directors and their bylaws.
With the assistance of Senator Joe Johnson and Frank Liggett from the law firm of LeBoeuf, Lamb, Leiby & MacRae (now Ragsdale Liggett), a proposal was sent to the North Carolina Department of Insurance (NCDOI) to have the NCSLA serve as a regulatory surplus lines support organization for the NCDOI. The proposal was accepted by the NCDOI and passed by legislation in July 1985.
Membership
The NCSLA began with a membership of less than 50 resident surplus lines licensees and has grown to over 4,000 members consisting of both resident and non-resident licensees.
Convention
Since 1986, the NCSLA has hosted an annual convention featuring industry-leading speakers, updates from WSIA, representatives from the NCDOI, and presentations by university students specializing in Risk Management and Insurance.
